The Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ramtane Lamamra, has stressed in New York that the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination is an inevitable and inalienable right.

In a speech before the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Algerian head of diplomacy reiterated Algeria’s position in support of the Sahrawi people’s right to freedom and independence.

Ramtane Lamamra pointed out that the United Nations bears the legal responsibility towards the Sahrawi people by organizing a referendum that enables the Sahrawi people to choose their future freely.

Ramtane Lamamra emphasized that organizing a free and fair referendum to enable the Sahrawi people to decide its destiny and determine its political future cannot remain forever dependent on the intransigence of an occupying state that has repeatedly failed to fulfill its international obligations, especially those emanating from the United Nations settlement plan in partnership with the Organization of African Unity and all relevant Security Council and General Assembly resolutions.
