Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita was dealt another blow when the British government included in a joint statement with Morocco paragraphs affirming the pivotal role of the United Nations in Western Sahara, in reaction to Trump’s declaration on Western Sahara that Morocco is trying to promote in international forums.

The statement asserted support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, ignoring the so-called autonomy proposal, which Bourita wished to include in the document.

In this regard, the United Kingdom reaffirmed its commitment to helping the parties – Morocco and the Polisario Front – to achieve a just and lasting political solution to the question of Western Sahara, ensuring self-determination for the people of Western Sahara in line with the principles and resolutions of the Charter of the United Nations.

The United Kingdom stressed the pivotal role of the United Nations in mediating to resolve the Sahrawi issue and reaffirmed its support for Security Council Resolution 2602.

The United Kingdom welcomed the appointment of Mr. Staffan de Mistura, the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, and affirmed its full support for his efforts to find a solution to this long-standing conflict, underlined the joint statement.
