The Polisario Front confirmed on Wednesday that all companies and countries involved in the illegal exploitation of the natural resources of Western Sahara will be legally pursued before international courts.

In a letter to German company Köster Marine Protein, the Polisario Front reiterated the legal status of Western Sahara, as a territory under Moroccan military occupation, pending the application of UN General Assembly Regulation 1514 (XV), known as the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, adopted later by the International Court of Justice in its advisory opinion on the issue of Western Sahara on October 16, 1975.

The Polisario Front called on Germany’s Köster Marine Protein to stop importing fishmeal from Western Sahara, as this constitutes a flagrant violation of international and European law, especially the European Court of Justice ruling issued on December 21, 2016 and February 27, 2018, which affirmed that Western Sahara and Morocco are two distinct and separate countries, and that Rabat does not have sovereignty over the Sahrawi territories that entitle it to dispose of their natural resources.

The total value of fishmeal illegally imported by Köster Marine Protein from occupied Western Sahara between 2017 and 2019 was approximately €40 million, it should be recalled.
