A new resolution adopted by the Decolonization Committee has affirmed the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence in accordance with the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and General Assembly Resolution 1514 (XV) of December 14, 1960, containing the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples.

The resolution – reviewed by Sumoud – stressed the responsibility of the United Nations towards the Sahrawi people, referring in the same context to all the resolutions of the General Assembly and the Security Council related to the issue of Western Sahara, particularly those related to the settlement plan leading to the organization of the referendum.

The resolution welcomed the efforts made by the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in search of a mutually acceptable political solution to the conflict that would guarantee the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara.
