High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, stated Monday that the European Union is closely following the situation in Western Sahara, especially after the developments that took place in Guerguerat that led to the outbreak of the war.

The European official confirmed, in a written response to questions addressed to the commission by MEPs Sandra Pereira and Joao Ferreira on the situation in Western Sahara – a copy of which obtained by Sumoud – that the European Union had conducted a series of contacts to examine the developments, emphasizing the need for a speedy resumption of the United Nations-led negotiations on Western Sahara.

The High Representative of the European Union reiterated the European Union’s support for the United Nations endeavors to find a peaceful settlement of the Western Sahara issue, welcoming in this context the commitment of the UN Secretary-General to relaunch the negotiation and resume the political process based on the criteria set by the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
