The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, Joseph Burrell, stressed Tuesday the European Union’s full support for the United Nations efforts to find a just and lasting solution to the question of Western Sahara and its support for the implementation of “credible” measures to ensure respect for human rights in the occupied Sahrawi territories.

In a written response to questions by Member of the European Parliament Pernando Barrena Arza, in which he called on the EU to put an end to repression and human rights violations by Morocco in Western Sahara, Josep Borrell said that the EU is “closely following” the situation in the occupied Sahrawi territories, “particularly Morocco’s targeting of human rights activists”.

In his reply, Burrell added that the European Union supported the Security Council’s call for the “development and implementation of independent and credible measures” to ensure full respect for human rights in the occupied Sahrawi territories.

The European official stressed that respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms was a “vital element in bilateral relations with Morocco.”
