High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Burrell, revealed Friday that the European Union had made formal contacts with the Polisario Front to understand the various aspects of the issue of Western Sahara.

In a written response to questions from Deputy Sandra Pereira, the European official highlighted that the contacts, the latest of which took place at the end of December 2020, i.e. after the outbreak of the war, discussed political developments and the humanitarian situation related to the Western Sahara issue, in reference to developments related to human rights violations in the occupied Sahrawi territories.

On this occasion, he reiterated his full support for the United Nations-led process to find a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution for the parties – Morocco and the Polisario Front – to the question of Western Sahara, in compliance with the relevant Security Council resolutions.

He stressed that the European Union is looking forward to the appointment of a new United Nations Personal Envoy for a speedy resumption of negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations.
