Finnish Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto affirmed that his country’s position on the legal status of Western Sahara remained unchanged, in response to the announcement by outgoing US President Doland Trump to recognize the alleged sovereignty of Morocco over Western Sahara.

In a written response to questions from Finnish MP Pia Lohikoski, the head of Finnish diplomacy highlighted that his country supported the resumption of negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario Front to find a solution that would guarantee the Sahrawi people the right to self-determination in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.

After affirming that Finland is closely following the developments in Western Sahara, the Finnish Minister for Foreign Affairs clarified that Trump’s declaration on Western Sahara had been rejected by the United Nations and the European Union, stressing the need to respect international law in Western Sahara.
