German leading civil society organizations called Monday on the Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations, Mr. Christoph Heusgen, to advocate at the Security Council session on Western Sahara in favor of organizing the self-determination referendum of the Sahrawi people.

In a letter delivered to the Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations, Mr. Christoph Heusgen, the organizations warned against the seriousness of the situation in Western Sahara as a result of the stalemate and the collapse of confidence in the United Nations-led process in Western Sahara.

The letter stressed that setting a timetable for achieving progress on the political process, reducing the mandate of MINURSO to six months, increasing the pace of Security Council meetings on Western Sahara, and establishing confidence-building measures are important steps that would make progress in resolving the Western Sahara issue.

The letter called on the Permanent Representative of Germany to pressure to expand the powers of the MINURSO, protect human rights, and put an end to the illegal exploitation of Western Sahara’s natural resources.
