The German government on Tuesday expressed its deep concern over the deteriorating situation in Western Sahara after the Moroccan army’s assault against Sahrawi civilians in Guerguerat.

The German Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in a statement that the violent clashes at the weekend constituted the most dangerous incident since the signing of the ceasefire agreement in 1991.

The statement of the German Ministry Foreign of Affairs urged the Polisario Front and Morocco to return to the negotiating table and the political process led by the United Nations, indicating that the Federal Government will push for the appointment of a new UN envoy on the Western Sahara territory.
