Sumoud, 27 August 2020 – The Australian government has reiterated its position in support of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, in a memorandum addressed to the United Nations, a copy of which was obtained by the Sumoud website.
The Australian government officially affirmed that it supports the United Nations’ inclusion of Western Sahara as a decolonization issue.
The memorandum highlighted that the Australian government encouraged moving towards organizing a referendum in which the people of Western Sahara would choose between independence and integration with Morocco.
The memorandum indicated that during the first three months of 2018, the Australian government made official contacts to urge Morocco to cooperate with the United Nations’ efforts in Western Sahara.
The memorandum praised the continued efforts made by the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to find a settlement to the conflict in Western Sahara.
