Western Sahara: International think tank calls on US and European states to avoid decisions influencing counterterrorism and immigration cooperation

The International Centre for the Study of Radicalization and Political Violence (ICSR) on Tuesday warned the United States and European states of the dire consequences of making ill-considered decisions on Western Sahara, in reference to Trump’s announcement on Western Sahara.

The Centre, which is based in the Department of War Studies at King’s College London, confirmed in a report on combating terrorism in North Africa – reviewed by Sumoud – that Trump’s announcement on Western Sahara caused tension in Morocco’s relations with European states, which had repercussions on cooperation in the fight against terrorism, and even extended to Morocco’s use of the immigration card against Spain.

The report called on Morocco’s European and American partners to recognize the interdependence between the Western Sahara conflict and all other policy areas, including the fight against terrorism.

The report noted that Trump’s announcement encouraged Morocco and made it more daring to take decisions to respond to the position of the European states on Trump’s announcement, such as allowing thousands of immigrants to enter Ceuta, and it may move on to other areas, such as threatening to refuse to cooperate in the fight against terrorism.
