The Republic of Ireland on Wednesday expressed its concern over the developments in Western Sahara following the Moroccan aggression against Sahrawi civilians in Guerguerat.

In response to a question from MP John Brady on developments in Western Sahara, Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Simon Coveney reiterated his country’s position in support of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and freedom.

The head of the Irish diplomacy made it clear that Dublin recognizes the UN classification of Western Sahara as colonial territory.

Simon Coveney expressed his country’s hope for a speedy resumption of the negotiations led by the United Nations and the appointment of a new UN envoy for Western Sahara.
