Italy denies intention to open consulate in occupied Western Sahara

Italy has denied recently published information that it intends to open diplomatic representation in occupied Western Sahara, expressing its support for UN efforts on the Sahrawi question.

“Regarding what has been reported by an article in the online magazine EL Espanol on the alleged imminent opening of an Italian consulate in Western Sahara, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs denies that any such consideration is currently under way”, the Ministry indicated in a note.

The Moroccan regime has been trying in recent months to convince a number of countries to open consulates in Western Sahara as a way of recognising its alleged sovereignty over these territories considered by the United Nations as occupied territory.

“Italy is following the issue of Western Sahara with great attention and guarantees full support for UN efforts,” the Italian Foreign Ministry note added.
