John Bolton: We threatened to use veto if Morocco and Polisario did not move towards referendum

Former US National Security Consultant John Bolton revealed that his conviction in the effectiveness of the referendum was what prompted him in 2018, to threaten the United States of America using its veto right against extending the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) if Morocco and the Polisario Front did not advance towards the referendum.

Mr. Bolton made it clear in an interview with the Spanish newspaper “El Mundo” that he was convinced that the referendum that was agreed upon should be organized, and that the name of the peacekeeping mission explained its task, and if there was no referendum, there was no need for the mission in the first place.

The US official highlighted that he assured the Moroccan foreign minister that he saw no justification for prolonging the Sahrawi question, because the solution is clear and the Sahrawis have the right to a referendum and self-determination, where they might choose to join Morocco.

On the issue of the danger of the spread of radical Islam, Mr. Bolton explained that the Polisario Front and the Sahrawi people were not part of this threat.
