The Mauritanian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mr. Ismail Ould Sheikh Ahmed, on Wednesday made a phone call with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Antonio Guterres, in which he addressed the tense situation in the Guerguerat strip near the northern border of Western Sahara, according to the Mauritanian News Agency.
The two sides talked about the seriousness of the current situation and the worry that it could lead to unforeseen acts of violence.
The Minister recalled the pioneering role that everyone expects from the United Nations to resolve this situation as soon as possible.
The Secretary-General informed the Minister of all the contacts he had been carrying out in order to avoid any aggravation of the situation on the ground, expressing his concerns about the seriousness of the situation.
The Secretary-General called on Mauritania to play its positive role recognized by all parties in order to resolve this crisis, while the minister stressed that these efforts have been going on for days.
The two sides agreed to continue efforts and contacts regarding the situation.
