Morocco-EU Association Agreements: Sweden opposes appeal against European Court verdict

9 months ago at 01/Dec/2021 34

Sweden has opposed the decision of the Council of the European Union (EU) to appeal the verdict of the European Court invalidating two agreements on fisheries and agriculture between Morocco and the EU and extended to occupied Western Sahara for non-compliance with the consent of the Sahrawi people, affirmed the Western Sahara Resource Watch (WSRW) international observatory.

“In a move that surprised no one, the EU Council appealed to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) (…) but the Council was not unanimous,” indicated WSRW on its website.

The observatory in charge of monitoring the exploitation of natural resources in occupied Western Sahara confirmed that “Sweden voted against the decision of the Council of the EU to appeal the decision of 29 September of the Court of the European Union, which annulled both the EU-Morocco agricultural agreement and the fisheries agreement insofar as they were applied to the occupied Sahrawi territories”.

“The Swedish objection to the appeal is in line with the country’s stated position that the EU-Moroccan bilateral agreements should not be extended to Western Sahara,” added the same source.
