The Polisario Front has agreed to the appointment of Swedish Staffan de Mistura as the new UN envoy for Western Sahara, replacing the German, Horst Kohler, who resigned from this post in 2019, Sahrawi ambassador to Algeria, Abdelakader Taleb Omar, told APS Thursday.

Mr. Taleb Omar said that the Polisario Front gave its agreement on April 29, noting that if the name of Staffan de Mistura has not yet been officially announced by the UN, it is certainly because of blockages that Morocco would have raised against the appointment of this diplomat.

Former UN mediator in Syria, Staffan de Mistura has been proposed by the UN Secretary General to be the fifth envoy of the UN organization for this non-self-governing territory.

However, the Polisario Front believes that the appointment of a new personal envoy is not “an end in itself,” noting that the role of this emissary is to “facilitate a vigorous and time-bound peace process that leads to the free and democratic exercise by the Sahrawi people of their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.
