The Portuguese Foreign Ministry reaffirmed on Wednesday that Lisbon position on Western Sahara conflict “remains unchanged,” supporting the relaunch of negotiations as part of the United Nations to reach a solution to the conflict in accordance with Security Council resolutions.

“Portugal continues to support the efforts of the UN Secretary-General to relaunch the negotiations, with the aim of achieving a political, lasting and mutually acceptable solution by the parties, in accordance with the resolutions of the UN Security Council,” added the Portuguese foreign ministry in a statement on Twitter.

In the same regard, the ministry denied information, relayed by some media outlets, on Portugal’s intention to open a consulate in occupied Western Sahara.

“The news of the alleged opening of a Portuguese consulate in Western Sahara is untrue,” the Portuguese Foreign Ministry added on Twitter, after the newspaper “El Espanol” reported that Portugal intends to open a diplomatic representation in the territory occupied by Morocco.
