Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebboune on Wednesday called on the United Nations (UN) to speed up the organization of the referendum on self-determination of the Sahrawi people, in a speech delivered by videoconference on the occasion of the 75th ordinary session of the UN General Assembly.

President Abdelmajid Teboune expressed regret over the obstacles to the settlement of the Western Sahara issue, particularly the suspension of negotiations between the two parties to the conflict and the delay in appointing a new UN envoy for Western Sahara.

The Algerian President called for the implementation of the relevant Security Council resolutions, especially the holding of the referendum on self-determination in Western Sahara, which has been postponed for more than 29 years, accelerating the appointment of an envoy of the UN Secretary-General, reviving the negotiations process between the two parties to the conflict, and achieving the aspirations of the peoples of the Maghreb and Africa in development and integration.
