Member of the European Parliament, Kostas Papadakis, stressed on Tuesday that the peaceful protests by the Sahrawi people, the last of which were in Guerguerat, are a natural reaction to the continued Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara, which for more than four decades has been causing the suffering and deprivation of the Sahrawi people of their legitimate rights and the enjoyment of their natural wealth.

The MEP clarified in questions addressed to the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, that the dispatch of armed forces to suppress peaceful protests in the Guerguerat region is a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement.

The MEP asked what the European Union could do to end the Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara and enable its people to freely determine their future without foreign interference.

The MEP called on the European Union to put pressure on Morocco to stop its violation of the ceasefire and to release the Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan.
