Russian Deputy Foreign Minister affirms his country’s support for resumption of negotiations between Morocco and Polisario Front

Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Russia, Sergey Vershinin, on Tuesday had a telephone conversation with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, according to a statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

During the conversation, the situation in Western Sahara and the prospect of the UN-led settlement process were discussed. In that context, the importance of achieving a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution to both parties – Morocco and the Polisario Front – to the question of Western Sahara on the basis of the relevant Security Council resolutions.

The statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry highlighted that the success of the efforts would contribute to alleviating tension in the region.

The focus was also placed on assessing the role of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) in achieving stability. In this context, the Russian side expressed its support for de Mistura’s efforts aimed at resuming negotiations between the two parties.
