US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, David Schenker, has affirmed that the United States was not considering establishing a military base in Western Sahara, as recently relayed in several Moroccan media reports.

Speaking at a press conference held on Thursday at the US Embassy headquarters in Algiers on the sidelines of his visit to Algeria, Mr Schenker said: “I want to be very clear: the United States is not in the process of establishing an American base in Western Sahara”, adding that “the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) has not mentioned the transfer of its headquarters in Western Sahara”.

This is “unfounded” information that has raised a lot of questions recently, following information relayed by several media, including Moroccan, he said.
