The President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Brahim Ghali, issued on Monday a presidential decree, in which he made important changes at the level of the General Staff of the Sahrawi People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), in preparation for the next phase of the National liberation war.
One of the most significant changes in the Presidential Decree was the creation of a Commander of Staff of the Sahrawi Army. The task was assigned to Mohamed Al-Wali Akik, member of the National Secretariat of the Polisario Front.
The appointments affected the military regions of the Sahrawi Army, the National Gendarmerie, the Central Directorate of Personnel, the Central Directorate of Army Security, the Central Directorate of Logistics, the Central Directorate of Operations and Inspection, the Central Directorate of Communications, the Central Directorate of Training, the Central Directorate for Reconnaissance and Engineering, the Central Directorate for Martyrs, Injured and Veterans Affairs, as well as to other sectors.
These changes come nearly a year after the resumption of armed struggle in Western Sahara, and come at a sensitive juncture in the Sahrawi issue and profound transformations in the region.
