Source close to UN SC: Current developments in Western Sahara issue may bring referendum back to forefront

A source close to the UN Security Council expected that the organization of the self-determination referendum in Western Sahara would gradually return to debate inside the corridors of the UN Security Council.

In a paper prepared by a circle close to the UN Security Council, the current stalemate and the failure of efforts to resolve the Western Sahara issue may lead the UN Security Council to discuss the referendum in Western Sahara, as it is the main task of UN mission MINURSO.

The UN Secretary-General is expected to issue a report over the coming days on developments in Western Sahara, containing recommendations presented to the UN Security Council.

The UN Security Council will hold meetings in October before voting on a new resolution on Western Sahara.

The paper confirmed that there is almost unanimity among the members of the UN Security Council on the negative repercussions of the delay in appointing a new special envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara on the situation in the region. (Sumoud)
