South Africa: Reviving negotiations must lead to organization of referendum for self-determination in Western Sahara

South Africa stressed Tuesday the importance of intensifying efforts to organize the long-awaited referendum for self-determination in Western Sahara.

speaking during a High-Level Commemorative Meeting to mark the 60th anniversary of the First Conference of Non-Aligned Countries, South African Deputy Foreign Minister Alvin Botes reiterated his country’s position in support of the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination in line with relevant resolutions of the African Union and the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council.

The South African official welcomed the appointment of Staffan de Mistura as the UN Personal Envoy for Western Sahara and called for the revival of the political process under his leadership in order to get out of the current political impasse.

The South African official stressed the urgent priority of moving the settlement process through negotiations leading to the organization of the long-awaited referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people.
