Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laya, confirmed on Tuesday that her country’s position on the Western Sahara issue is fixed and firm.
The heads of Spanish diplomacy emphasized that the United Nations must play a central role in finding a negotiated solution to the conflict in Western Sahara.
The Spanish official confirmed Madrid has been following developments in Western Sahara since November 2020, and has been in contact with UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, and appealed to both parties to avoid escalation in the region.
The Spanish Foreign Minister praised the support provided by the government to the Sahrawi refugees, which in the last three years exceeded 23 million euros.
The head of Spanish diplomacy paid tribute to the broad solidarity of Spanish society with the Sahrawi people, describing it as necessary and important.
