The Swedish Foreign Minister, Ann Linde, reiterated Thursday the position of her country on the Saharawi issue, stating that the status of Western Sahara can only be determined by a solution that guarantees the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination.

“The Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs recalls that the status of Western Sahara can only be determined by a fair, lasting and mutually acceptable negotiated solution that satisfies the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination in accordance with international law,” Linde said in a tweet.

The minister announced that her government “will continue to defend its position on the Sahrawi issue, “through its contacts with the Biden administration,” stressing the importance of working for the resumption of the UN-led political process to find a solution to the question of Western Sahara, consistent with international law.

She also reaffirmed the urgency of “appointing as soon as possible a personal envoy of the Secretary General”.
