The 2nd Vice-President of the Swedish Parliament, Lotta Johnsson Fornarve, has called on the Government of Sweden to intervene to immediately stop the human rights violations committed by the Moroccan occupying forces against Sahrawi civilians in the occupied territories.

In an intervention in the Swedish Parliament, the Swedish official declared that “Western Sahara is again in a state of war, hence the need for Sweden to ask the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to intervene immediately to protect the Saharawi people in the occupied territories of Western Sahara”.

After recalling Sweden’s position in favor of the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination in accordance with international law, Ms. Fornarve affirmed that “the Swedish government must make more efforts to guarantee this right to the Saharawi people through the organization of a referendum”.

She called on the Government of her country “to recognize the Sahrawi state on the basis of the recommendation of the Swedish Parliament adopted in 2012, being the appropriate solution to end the Moroccan occupation, in accordance with the will of the Sahrawi people.
