Timor-Leste reiterates support for Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence

The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste has reiterated its commitment to assist and contribute to the realization of the rights of the Saharawi people to fully independent state and sovereignty over their natural resources.

Speaking before the 4th Committee of the United Nations General Assembly on the question of decolonization and peacekeeping operation, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Timor-Leste, H.E. Mrs. Maria Helena Pires, calls on the full implementation of MINURSO’s mandate, to hold a referendum to allow the Saharawi people to exercise their right to self-determination.

Timor-Leste also urged the UN Secretary General to appoint a new special envoy as soon as possible to resume the talks between Morocco and Frente Polisario with the participation of Algeria and Mauritania.
