Uganda expressed Monday regret over the delay in completing the decolonization process in Western Sahara, calling the holding of a referendum on the self-determination of the Sahrawi people without further delay.

The Uganda delegation at the United Nations called on the Decolonization Committee to assume its responsibility for the eradication of colonialism in Western Sahara and to send a fact-finding mission to the Territory.

The Ugandan diplomat stressed the important role of the African Union in contributing to the resolution of the question of Western Sahara, calling on the United Nations to support the efforts of the African Union to achieve a peaceful and lasting solution consistent with the United Nations and African Union resolutions.
