United Kingdom Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa, James Cleverly, said today, Tuesday, that his country is closely monitoring the situation in Western Sahara.

The British official affirmed that London is closely following the situation in Western Sahara, and urges the two parties – Morocco and the Polisario Front – to avoid further escalation and to engage in the political process led by the United Nations, in response to a question by Labour Party MP Grahame Morris about the British government’s assessment of the implementation of the Geneva Conventions on the conflict in Western Sahara.

On Britain’s position on the legal status of Western Sahara, the British minister stressed that the UK’s position had not changed, as the government considered the status of Western Sahara to be undetermined and fully supported the UN’s efforts to find a solution that would guarantee the Sahrawi people the right to self-determination.
