The UN Security Council has circulated the proposals of the African Union (AU) for the settlement of the conflict in Western Sahara, which has aggravated since the violation of the ceasefire by Morocco on 13 November, which aimed at meeting the conditions for a new ceasefire and achieving a just and lasting solution that allows self-determination of the Sahrawi people, according to media.

The document circulated Friday by the Security Council underlines the African Union’s concern about the situation in the region of El-Guerguerat, , in the far south of Western Sahara, once again in the grip of war following Moroccan military aggression and the violation of the ceasefire agreement in force since 1991.

The document also refers to the expected contribution of the AU in support of UN efforts, through the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC), a dialogue with the two parties, SADR and Morocco, both members of the pan-African organisation, to “meet the conditions for a new ceasefire and achieve a just and lasting solution to the conflict that will allow the self-determination of the Saharawi people, in accordance with the relevant decisions and resolutions of the African Union and the UN and the objectives and principles of the Constitutive Act of the AU”.

The African Union summit, scheduled for the first week of February, will consider the situation in Western Sahara in the light of the African PSC’s report on its consultations and proposals for the settlement of the issue.
