The United Nations has expressed its deep concern at the escalation of repression, attacks and harassment against Saharan journalists and human rights activists in the occupied territories and the direct targeting of the Saharan Organ against Moroccan Occupation (ISACOM) since its establishment on 20 November 2020, the date of the outbreak of war in Western Sahara.

In a memorandum sent to the Government of Morocco on 10 June 2021, to which no reply has yet been received, UN experts stated that ISACOM is a body that defends the rights of the people of Western Sahara to independence/self-determination, calls for the release of Saharan prisoners held in Moroccan prisons.

The experts expressed their deep concern about acts of harassment, physical and sexual assault, acts of intimidation and death threats against human rights defenders, the continued presence of security forces in front of the house of activist Sultana Khaya, since November 2020, and the severe restrictions on her freedom of movement as a result of this presence, the impact on her physical and psychological safety and her death threat.

The experts called for measures to be taken to ensure that human rights defenders, including members of civil society, are able to operate in an environment that allows them to carry out their legitimate activities without fear of harassment, stigmatization or criminalization of any kind, as well as their physical integrity.
