The United Nations General Assembly unanimously endorsed Thursday evening a resolution reaffirming the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence in accordance with the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and General Assembly resolution 1514 (XV) of 14 December 1960 containing the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples.

The resolution made clear the responsibility of the United Nations vis-à-vis the Sahrawi people, referring in the same context to all General Assembly and Security Council resolutions on the question of Western Sahara, particularly those on the settlement plan leading to the organization of the referendum.

The resolution welcomed the efforts of the Secretary-General and his personal envoy to achieve a mutually acceptable political solution to the conflict that ensures the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara.
