Sumoud, 29 August 2020 – The Sahrawi Republic (SADR), which was proclaimed in 1976, is today recognized by many countries all over the world and it is a full member of the African Union, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has confirmed.

The Geneva-based organization stated in an introductory paper on Western Sahara that the United Nations considers the Polisario Front the legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people and affirms the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.

The paper highlighted that Morocco occupied Western Sahara in 1975 despite UN resolutions calling for a referendum on self-determination in the territory.

The paper indicates that the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), established in 1991, is tasked with preparing to organize a referendum in which the people of Western Sahara choose between independence and integration with Morocco.
