US Congress opposes establishment of US consulate in Western Sahara

The US Senate has approved a resolution prohibiting the State Department from using its financial allocations to establish or operate a consulate in Western Sahara.

This significant decision reflects the US Congress’ rejection of the barter announced by Trump over alleged Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, in exchange for the recognition of Israel by Morocco.

“This position, which the Congress has consistently reiterated, corresponds to the position of the international community, which does not recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara in accordance with the provisions of international law and resolutions of international legitimacy,” said Mouloud Saeed, the representative of the Polisario Front in Washington.
