Moroccan expert on international relations Mohamed Cherkaoui has confirmed that the recent remarks made by Us State Department spokesperson Ned Price on Western Sahara carry multiple messages.
The Moroccan researcher clarified that the US official completely ignored the US recognition of the alleged Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, and had merely welcomed once again the agreement between Morocco and Israel without commenting on what Kouchner had pledged on President Trump’s behalf.
He alluded to the “long-term gains” between Morocco and Israel, as if it were a bilateral rather than a tripartite agreement and a White House endorsement.
Researcher Mohamed Cherkaoui indicated that the confirmation of normalization was present and the confirmation of recognition was absent in the official spokesperson’s speech.
The Moroccan researcher highlighted that the US official had stressed fundamental issues in his statement when he renewed Washington’s commitment to the diplomatic process supervised by the United Nations, and that the Biden administration also supported the mission of MINURSO within the same mandate that the Security Council approved in its annual reports since 1991, namely the organization of the referendum on self-determination.
